The 2025 China Polyurethanes Technical Conference was successfully held in Yantai

2025-10-27 11:52

To promote technological innovation and the application of polyurethane materials, the China Polyurethane Industry Association, in collaboration with the Journal of “Polyurethane Industry”, and the upstream and downstream sectors of the polyurethane industry, held the 2025 China Polyurethanes Technical Conference at Four Points By Sheraton Yantai from October 22nd to 24th. Dr. Weiqi Hua, the President of the Board of Directors of  “Polyurethane Industry” Journal, delivered the opening speech and presented the reports on the 15th Five-Year Plan regarding PU tech innovation, evolution, and prospects. Secretary-General of the China Polyurethane Industry Association, Mr. Guohui Lv, presented the topic on how the polyurethane industry transforms and develops for the low-carbon era.

The conference convened business leaders, technical experts, and enterprise representatives from the upstream materials producers to downstream users of the full polyurethane chain,  such as Huntsman, Wanhua Chemical, Shandong INOV, Huafon Group, China Aerospace Science & Industry Corporation, and CNOOC. Some scientists and researchers of scientific research institutes and university professors from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xi'an Modern Chemistry Research Institute, Nanjing Tech University, etc., were invited to speak at conferences as well. The conference included diverse discussions and speeches, where topics ranged from the polyurethane industry trends to technological innovation, from current wants and needs to various market segments. Delivery of numerous industry heavyweights offering insightful presentations spurred the whole attendance in-depth discussions regarding how the Chinese polyurethane industry can unlock green technology, implement sustainable product strategies, promote PU innovative marketing fields, pay attention to the alternative raw materials of PU in multiple fields, accelerate bio-based PU innovation, and approach the whole industry's high-quality development.

During the conference, all the representatives were also invited to visit the Wanhua Cishan Science and Technology Innovation Building Exhibition Hall and the Laboratory Corridor in Wanhua Global Research Center, where the core R&D functions and the main platform for showcasing Wanhua Chemical Group's products and technology are located.

At present, China has become a global center for polyurethane R&D and production, ranking No. 1 worldwide in both production and consumption. According to the information illustrated in the conference report, China's polyurethane products production reached over 13 million tons in 2024, which accounted for approximately 30% of the global total. The products are classified into five categories: polyurethane soft foam, polyurethane hard foam, CASE (Coatings, Adhesives, Sealants, Elastomers), Spandex, and other materials. Polyurethane is a multifunctional material widely used in diverse fields, such as construction, automotive, furniture, transportation, aerospace, PV, new energy vehicles, healthcare, and AI etc.

In the contemporary global landscape, even though we must face geopolitical uncertainties, rising energy prices, and the need for a sustainability strategy, every coin has two sides. Growth opportunities in polyurethane could be the new technologies using bio-based polyols, CO2-based polyols as the green raw materials. The bio-based polyurethanes are a sustainable material that minimizes reliance on fossil fuels. The key properties, such as good mechanical strength, biodegradability, and excellent chemical resistance, deliver outstanding performance superior to that of traditional polyurethane. The growing demand across industries like green construction, automotive, electronics, aerospace, and healthcare could potentially contribute to the bio-based polyurethane market growth.
